"This used to be the lock for the electric generator room just next to the hotel storeroom and kitchen. The chief electrician, who also happened to be hylam (slang for Hainanese and their perceived pedantic nature), gave this to me after much persuasion and with me replacing it with a China-made Globe brand lock. F**king station master didn’t notice a thing. Lock was then used to lock up my store."

*NB – Lim Kiang's family owned the hotel at the KTM Railway station at Tanjong Pagar, this is his recollection: "My father started the hotel in the late 40's and me and my brothers carried on the business till it was forced to close. I live, eat & shit there, for the better part of my life. If I am not wrong, I have lived there since I was 16 years old."
