Library Cards

"Pink library cards (L-folds), and card catalogues... I've always had an affinity for the national libraries, right from about Primary 3 or so. Not that I liked reading – too many words, too little time. But libraries were a great escape from having to do actual homework. The Queenstown and Bukit Merah libraries were the ones nearest to home and school, so those were the regular haunts.

The geek side of me was constantly fascinated with the filing system and set myself complicated tasks of searching obscure things using the card catalogue system. Again, not that I read any of the books. Then came computers – and the OPAC system that the libraries adopted became an endless source of discovery. Much of what I know of Boolean search strategies was developed during those times."
