You Might Have A Piece of History In Your Own Storeroom

We believe that anyone who calls Singapore home has something precious to offer when it comes to piecing together a personal portrait of everyday life on the island.

It can be a school memento, an old photograph, or even a ceramic pot that you suspect to have come from one of the island’s iconic dragon kilns.

If there is something that you think may help with our shared mission, do contact us at dreamingpunk@gmail.com.

Describe to us briefly what the item is, or even better, attach a mugshot of it taken with your phone or whatever devices you have; but more importantly, tell us about yourself and how you became acquainted with the item.

How Will We Archive Your Heritage?

Once we ascertain that we will curate your item as part of this online museum, we will take the following steps:

1. Photograph The Artifact

We will arrange a day and location of your convenience to take pictures of your item. We have a mobile studio rig and can go almost anywhere so you will not be put out. Depending on the size of the item, we will take between 1 – 2hours to archive your artifact.

2. Record Your Oral History

More important than the artifact itself is your personal connection with it. It may have come from an important school sports competition that has warmed your heart till today, or it could be an object that helps you remember loved ones. Whatever it is, tell us your story.

3.Research The Artifact’s Historical Context

We will not simply publish your story alone; as curators and history buffs ourselves, we will unearth what we can to find out more about the items’ context in the island’s history. Sometimes, what we uncover can also help you appreciate what you have even more.

4. Publish the Artifact and Our Findings on the Site

Once we are sure of our findings, we will organize your story and your artifact together with the facts we know and put it online as part of this museum’s exhibits.

Please note that Singapore Storeroom is a labor of love and not a commercial enterprise. We hope that potential contributors can understand that we will not be able to offer any monetary reward for artifacts and stories contributed.

How Do You Know You Might Have Something With A Story to Tell?

To ensure that the online museum stays relevant to its mission, we do have to sift through the various items that may come to our attention. But then again, that’s what we do as curators. Our broad criteria are as such:

  1. The relic has to be at least 20 years old
  2. The relic should be an item ubiquitous during an era
  3. The relic should preferably be made, designed or conceptualized in Singapore
  4. The item should preferably be a mundane item that was once taken for granted

Again, this is a very broad criterion and we do not profess to know everything. If you know you have something that fits, please, contact us.
